Welcome to “Good Men Do Something 2.0″!

We (Benjamin & Russell Bartholomew) started GMDS January 2011, originally as a facebook page as a way to chronicle our activism.  We thought that if we were wildly successful a few people might join us, a few people might be inspired by us, and a few people might follow what we do via the facebook page.  Realistically we just expected to get our feet wet with activism, ahead of our move to New Hampshire as signers to the Free State Project. If You See Something, Film Something

If You See Something, Film Something
By Russell Bartholomew

The Department of Homeland Security has its “if you see something, say something” campaign aimed at creating paranoia among citizens and putting even more faith and trust in the government.

But there is an even better campaign, called “if you see something, film something,” aimed at creating more accountability in society, particularly public officials, but also the private citizens who interact with them.

TAXES=THEFT

TAXES=THEFT
By Benjamin Bartholomew

When I say “CHEMOTHERAPY=POISON”, that isn’t to say that chemotherapy isn’t sometimes necessary; it is merely acknowledgment of the dangerous nature of chemotherapy. The hope is that the chemicals will kill the cancer before they kill the patient.

When my brother and I display a sign that reads “TAXES=THEFT”, it isn’t to say that taxes are unnecessary – that is another argument; it’s simply a reminder that whenever government provides a service, the money to pay for it is being taken by threat of force from you and your neighbors.

From: http://www.appeal-democrat.com/news/bartholomew-115548-brothers-sowles.html

Two Wheatland brothers asked for leniency Thursday and received the lightest sentence possible for delaying a peace officer last year during an anti-tax protest.

Results From Sentencing And Statements To The Court

Just eight days shy of the one year anniversary of their arrest, Benjamin & Russell Bartholomew were sentenced for “delaying an officer”.

Today the judge gave essentially the most minimum sentence he could without overturning the jury.  Despite the D.A.’s office seeking a additional penalties, the judge sentenced Benjamin & Russell to 6 months probation, one day in jail (time served), and the state of California’s mandatory minimum of a $120 restitution fine & a $70 court security fee, each.

Despite the judges sentence, keep in mind that their property including two cell phones and video camera have been held (and are still being held) since their arrest, they’ve gone through the expense of legal council, taken numerous days off of work to appear in court, as well as all the other hassles and incidentals of being taken to court on criminal charges.

I LOST, AND IT BOTHERS ME

From: http://paulboylan.wordpress.com/2012/04/07/i-lost-and-it-bothers-me/
As most who visit here know, I play many roles, one of them being the role of an attorney.  During my legal career I’ve won many cases, lost some, and that is to be expected. You learn more from your mistakes than you do from your victories.  But I’ve never lost a jury trial – until now. Continue Reading →

Jury Convicts Tax Protesters
A Yuba County Jury Limits Free Speech

By John Mistler
Marysville, CA – A Yuba CountyJury convicted two Wheatland brothers of delaying a peace officer. The two brothers, Benjamin and Russell Bartholomew, were arrested on April 28, 2011 for displaying a protest sign on a freeway overpass that read  “TAXES=THEFT”. The act in and of its self is not a crime. This begs the question why did the officers stop? The arresting officer is Yuba County Deputy Sheriff Kenny Sowles who, according to the Appeal-Democrat April 6, 2012, said he now knows that he was not correct in telling the brothers that they were committing a crime. Before they knew they were wrong five deputies had arrived on the scene. Continue Reading →
